Born in the Italian Alps, Alberto Frigo has lived and worked in Europe, North America and China. After leading several projects at MIT and Harvard Univeristy he undertook a doctorate in Stockholm and he is currently mainly focusing on the construction of a building in the Italian Alps where to host his 36 years long project. He has been a teacher and a researcher contributing to the topic of archiving as not a dominant practice but rather as a precarious practice conducted by individuals to “stow” reality within established containers (cabinets or architectures) in order to rescue it and later “regenerate” it from a crisis. Using examples such as August Sander, Dziga Vertov and Vivian Maier, he has therefore coined the term “stowing” in relation to archiving, hoarding, logging and storing. Today, the 24th of September 2017, marks 14 years since I started photographing every object I have used with my right hand. We are talking about an average of 76 pictures I take every day, a quite accurate DNA of my everyday activity where the object photographs works as the letter of an alphabet. I plan to continue the project until 2040. I will be 60 years old then and the photo and my archive will comprise of approximately 1.000,000 photos. Most importantly, I will have completed the spatial presentation I have planned: a square of 12 by 12 metres comprising of 432 photographic panels, each of them corresponding to a month, and each of them showing small lines, which are the daily sequences of objects. Currently, I am not only attempting to build an architecture where to host this project but also I have assigned to the elements of this architecture, other records of the reality I am experiencing.
