ABOUT

Membrana – journal of photography is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to promoting profound, bold and theoretically grounded conceptions of photography. Straddling the space between a scholarly journal and a visually daring publication, Membrana offers an open forum for critical reflection on the medium, photography theory, presenting both relevant analytical texts and exceptional visual projects. The journal is published biannually in summer and in winter in English and in Slovenian (under the title Fotografija) by the Ljubljana-based non-profit institute Membrana.

Membrana is committed to championing new voices and is open to unsolicited submissions for articles of original research, visual projects, essays and reviews. Please note that we rarely accept submissions of already written texts; we prefer to discuss possible themes in advance. This is why we have put in place a proposal system that can grant both editors and authors the time to ensure all submissions are well-considered.

Membrana is an independent publisher based in Slovenia. It publishes journals Membrana and Fotografija and books from the field of photography theory. The institute also organises exhibitions, is engaged in research in the field of photography and in organisation of educational and discursive events.
